About Us
Since 1927

We invite you to become a member of an organization that was founded in 1927 by a small group of artists and craftspeople who produced quality art. Our founding members not only wanted to create a space in which to exhibit and sell works of art, but also to help others to understand what constitutes good art. The Society operates its own gallery and is documented as a non-profit organization with over 450 members.

The workings of the organization

A Board of Directors and an Artists’ Advisory Council keep the organization running successfully.

The Board of Directors is responsible for policy and financial decisions.

Artists’ Advisory Council is responsible for artistic decisions. With the exception of the 2 yearly rental shows, the Council determines the Gallery’s show calendar for the year. Each council member serves as a chairperson for one or two shows a year, providing a jury of selection, a show notice, written material to promote the show, show installation and removal, arrangements for the reception hospitality, and at the end of the show, a performance review for the MSA monthly newsletter, "The Palette."

Our goals and how we achieve them

Showing and selling artwork in an attractive setting is a goal we all share. In order to provide this, MSA depends heavily on the combined volunteer effort of all its members to successfully operate the gallery.

In order to enter artwork in the monthly shows, each member is required to do volunteer work for the organization. Two (2) work-to-show hours are required per month beginning in January each year, for a total of twelve (12) hours for the June show. Required hours for the July show revert to two (2) hours and increases two (2) hours per month. You can always contact the office for a list of the many ways to volunteer your time. Those who cannot volunteer may pay $3 per work hour needed.

"The Palette" published each month contains a calendar listing meetings, deadlines, and events of the society, including the monthly show notice. It also contains the President’s message, reports from committee members, announcements, and Artists in Action, a feature about the many activities of the membership.

Ways to Show Artwork:
  • Monthly shows
  • rental gallery
  • craft gallery
Monthly Shows
Receiving days are usually the Monday and Tuesday preceding the opening of the show, from 10 AM to 1:00 PM. You may submit work earlier if you are unable to come in on the specified receiving days, but in no case after 1:00 on Tuesday.

The Gallery retains 30% of the sold artwork price.

Since we have limited storage space, we ask that members pick up accepted work immediately after a show, or immediately upon notification that your entry was not accepted. All work not picked up after 15 days will be placed in our annual auction.

Rental Gallery
The MSA Rental Gallery is one of the finest rental galleries in Northern California. Almost every month, we have rental receiving. The same work-to-show hours apply. "The Palette" will state the date of screening. All work must be received the Sunday before the actual jurying. "Screeners" selected by the Rental Gallery Committee, select the rental artwork. Once work is accepted and placed on the pullout racks, it will stay for three (3) months. If not rented during that time, the artist is notified to pick it up.

Craft Gallery
The Craft Committee has designated jury dates for articles to be placed in the Craft Gallery, please call the office for more information.

The office staff and members are always available to help you with questions regarding your membership in Marin Society of Artists.
